Feeling Transcendental
Woke several times during the night by moderate rain showers. Nice heavy tropical moisture coming from the south. When I finally got up and fixed coffee I had this overpowering need to go frolic in the rain. A little communing with nature. Perfect time for a bike ride.
Soggy but not cold. Intermittent showers. Hints of brighter sky between downpours. Some people hunkered down and scurrying in a vain attempt to stay dry. More than a few loons like myself reveling in the wet.
Gathering Empiricals
Collected two data points. Hypotheses are firming up.
- Austin drivers have water soluble brains.
- Breathable rain jackets are a marketing hoax.
Well, not all drivers. But more than a few seem to completely lose the ability to think when their brain dissolve in the rain.
I already knew about my rain jacket. It’s only redeeming feature is the screaming bright orange that shouts at my fellow road users. But I did discover something new. My fancy expensive rain jacket comes with zippers under the arms. This feature is supposed to improve ventilation. Yeah, not so much. But what they are really good at is collecting rain water.
Always a debate in weather like this where the temperature is moderate. Do I wear a rain jacket and stay kinda dry or do I just layer up a little and let the rain in. Much like the marginal utility of having glasses with clear lenses. Keeps the drops out of the eyes but let’s them collect on the lens to inhibit vision. What is the point?
No Big Plans
Didn’t have anything huge scheduled for today. Now that I’m back inside and approaching a state of dry, I think I’ll settle down for a quiet afternoon of reading. Coffee, gray rainy weather, science fiction. Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Coffee and SciFi on a day like this would be just swell. I’m stuck memorizing statistical formulas instead! Thanks, for the post, Tim. It was a good study break.
