12 Hour Volunteer

Woke up a little stiff and sore this morning.  Had every intention of riding today despite the impending rain.  Think I’ll let my tired old body rest today.  Good day for reading on the couch and listening to the rain.

Spent 12 hours at the Yellow Bike shop yesterday.  We had a couple of work parties for various projects.  The first was spreading 6 yards of dillo dirt and 6 yards of mulch to prepare seed beds for wildflowers.  We’re applying for a habitat exemption so that we don’t have to mow the ground surrounding the shop.  With a little stewardship we can not only make the shop look more attractive for our neighbors but we’ll be providing food, shelter and water for our animal friends.

The second project was to install more wheel racks.  We have piles of wheels sitting on the ground underneath our storage trailers.  Not only is this a code violation but it’s unattractive and inefficient.  And not very beneficial to the wheels.  Very difficult to sort through the wheels if you need a particular size or style.  Now we can get them up off the ground and while we hang we can sort and cull out the wheels that will never see a bicycle again.  They’ll either become art or be recycled as scrap.

We made some nice changes to the shop, especially in how we sort and store used parts.  Still a lot of work to do but it’s much easier to find many components.

Stiff, sore but satisfied.  A round of applause for my volunteer friends and the wonderful shop they’ve built.
