Dove Season

Pop…pop…pop!

What the …

For a microsecond my training almost kicked in.  Drop, roll.  Weapon off safe.  Prepare to fight through the ambush.  Where the hell did I put that grenade?  Switch to local call for fire net.

Thunder this is Lightning 14, fire mission, over.

As just as quickly I’m back to reality.  Oh yeah, Cameron Road.  I’m about to turn on to Gregg Lane to go under 130 and then to Fuchs Road.  What is all that gunfire?  Oh right, it’s the First of September and I’m in Texas:  dove season has started.

Zone 2 Goodness

Just a little stretch of the legs.  Headed out into the quiet of east Travis County.  Only not so quiet.

This week’s rides will be relatively short like today.  Just enough to keep the muscles loose.  Next Saturday is my first brevet attempt.  Two hundred kilometers of pedaling.  No SAG.  No traffic control.  No volunteer manned rest stops.  Just me, my steel touring bike and my fellow crazy randonneurs.  Can’t wait.
