Austin Transportation Bond – Cameron/Dessau

Project listed as $150,000.

Ready for construction.  Stripe bicycle lanes between Braker Lane and 51st Street.

Confession.  I’ve never ridden on Dessau/Cameron.  Well, let me be more precise.  I attempted Dessau once a little further north of Braker and promptly escaped to the sidewalk.  During rush hour Dessau can be very busy and at the time I wasn’t prepared to assert my rights as a vehicle.  Perhaps with bike lanes it might be easier to navigate.

I have seen a lot of bike traffic head north on Cameron off of 51st Street.  Other than that I don’t know how much bike traffic this will service.

Dessau at Braker

Dessau at Dungan

Cameron at Anderson

Cameron at Hwy 290

Cameron at 51st

  1. For a while, I rode this one as a commuter four days a week (from 51st up to Rundberg)–but it was at Oh Dark Thirty, or actually long before the sun came up most days. Without traffic, it’s a great and useful stretch of road. I think (but don’t know) that there’s at least one longstanding ACA ride that starts around there, though I don’t know where it goes from the departure point. Seems a good way to start getting out towards New Sweden and all the windswept parts out Northeast.

But in traffic, particularly in *that* kind of traffic (Ford F-650s hauling trailers stacked with earth-moving equipment, for instance), it’s no bueno. Escaping to the sidewalk (as you said) is the only real option, in my opinion.

Side note: Ken’s Tacos makes very possibly the most overstuffed breakfast tacos in the city. I mean that as a great compliment. Experience says, however, it’s not a good idea to show up there in Lycra.
